Supporting small businesses is as important as ever, with competition coming literally from all directions. But what would really push us further to buy local products?
1. Your spending boosts our local economy.
Buying local products has a more positive economic impact than buying products that’s been imported! Several studies have shown that when you buy from a locally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms — continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. For sure, our economy will be strong at the core if Filipinos buy locally.
2. You help create more jobs for Pinoys.
Small local businesses have the potential for more employment generation in our country. With that, buying locally means that employment levels are more likely to be stable, and may even create more opportunities for Pinoys to work in the community. In patronizing our own products, we are creating jobs. Our problem with un-employment will diminish.
3. You create more product choices.
Local businesses sift through competing goods and services to find those appealing to their customers. They are selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.
Buying local means your money goes directly into the community to support its growth and sustainability. Community-based businesses are vital to charitable projects; their owners have a natural interest in the community’s long-term health. Local owners frequently serve on local boards and support numerous causes.
5. You might get a better deal or some good advice.
Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers. They would be able to recommend products you may wish to buy. And If you’re a lucky regular buyer, you can be granted with informal discounts. Some of them are prepared to negotiate on prices. Independent retailers can use their discretion to reward regular customers, and it can mean you get discounts on the items you actually want to buy.
6. Reduce environmental impact.
Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town/city. This generally denotes contributing less to pollution and habitat loss.
So why go local? This is best explained by Michael H. Shuman, “Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.”
Filipino made is worth buying.
